Alexander Harvey IV: Biography of a School Administrator

Alexander Harvey IV may not be a household name, but his influence is incalculable; he is not a celebrity, or even an especially public figure, and he has not revolutionized the world in some obvious way, yet the impact he has made on kids across the country is inestimable. As a successful headmaster and coach at country day schools around the nation, Alexander Harvey IV has been a mentor, an encouragement, and an inspiration—and he’s quietly built a legacy for himself as one of the country’s leading educators.

His own education was from Vanderbilt University, where Alexander Harvey IV studied—naturally—education. His graduate studies took place at Baltimore’s Loyola College—again, with an emphasis in education—but his story really gets interesting at his first role as a school administrator, at Charlotte, North Caorlina’s own Charlotte Country Day School. Here Alexander Harvey IV oversaw the entire middle school—500 kids, spanning grades 5-8—and he learned lessons about school administration that would ultimately serve him well at the schools he went to next.

Specifically, Alexander Harvey IV went from Charlotte to Denver, Colorado to accept a role as headmaster of the Graland Country Day School. He would spend three years at this school, which boasted 650 kids in its K-9 program. Alexander Harvey IV could list many achievements from his time at Graland, but the most significant might be the major success he had in fundraising—bringing to the school an astounding $11 million!

But the most significant posting of Alexander Harvey IV’s career as a school administrator—and also the longest—was at Alexandria Country Day School in Alexandria, Virginia. He spent ten years at this school, and is frequently given credit for turning it around, both in terms of its finances and its educational standards; indeed, while serving at this small school of just 240 kids, Alexander Harvey IV accomplished some major fundraising victories and also tightened the school’s hiring policy, ensuring that only the very best teachers were brought on board.

And that’s to say nothing of Alexander Harvey IV’s tenure as basketball coach at Alexandria, where he led the team to a championship win for the first time in the school’s history. All this is to say simply that the man’s impact on each of these fine schools—and on the kids in attendance—is difficult to even wrap one’s head around. It certainly stands as a crystal clear education of why, in the world of education, Alexander Harvey IV is regarded as not just a leader, but a true visionary.
